We the undersigned petition Woking Borough Council to Make West Byfleet a flagship eco village. More details

Petition update from the council, 24 February 2020

Thank you for your petition proposing designation of West Byfleet as an eco-village. Please accept my sincere apologies for the delay in our reply. We are always interested to learn of opportunities through which individual local communities, and the borough as a whole, can do more to tackle climate change. Every positive local action adds up to make a global difference.

As you mention, last summer the Council declared a climate emergency. This recognises the continued priority the borough gives to addressing global climate change, including biodiversity and habitat losses, through strong local commitment and most importantly actions. Woking 2050 is our current climate change strategy, adopted in 2015. This sets out a vision guiding our collective efforts to create a sustainable borough by reducing our impact on the environment. We deliver Woking 2050 in a number of ways: through our own projects, by offering support to the environmental work projects of others (for example Woking Environment Action - (see their website) formerly known as Woking Local Action 21) and through the Council’s ThamesWey companies, including the Action Surrey initiative. The Council has also pledged to become zero carbon by 2030 across its own estate and operations. You can read more about what is already being done locally on climate change on our website.

Your request raises a number of interesting suggestions, some of which are opportunities already being tested elsewhere in the Borough. The Council Green Infrastructure Manager, Tracey Haskins, would be happy to meet with you to discuss your ideas, update you on the mosaic of sustainability and biodiversity projects already underway, and signpost you to helpful contacts, to help you make West Byfleet a leading light in efforts for the environment. You can contact Tracey by email at tracey.haskins@woking.gov.uk or by telephone on 01483 743477.

Kind Regards,

Ray Morgan
Chief Executive
Woking Borough Council

More details from petition creator

We, the residents of West Byfleet, feel strongly that we want to maintain the fantastic community and reputation of our village.

Understanding that climate change has come to the forefront of local, national and international news and in response to Woking Borough Council now calling a state of climate emergency, we ask Woking Borough Council (WBC) to make West Byfleet an eco village. We ask WBC to do all they can to achieve this including promoting West Byfleet to eco companies such as Terracycle and Friends of the Earth to propose that they locate their offices there with West Byfleet becoming an eco hub.

With WWF HQ now being stationed at Woking, there is an opportunity for West Byfleet to host eco shops such as recycling dropoffs, community fridges, replanting and rewilding play areas, pop ups, remakery centres and community spaces that take into account the latest technology and sustainable resources.

Woking has previously had a reputation for being ‘green’, so this could be a fantastic opportunity to create something revolutionary; for West Byfleet, Woking Borough, South East and further afield, at this time of environmental change and responsibility.
